Cathy Greenly, a real estate agent in Los Angeles, owns Gucci totes and a Marc Jacobs multipocket Sofia bag. But she is already on the prowl. ”For me, one of the most exciting things about fashion is getting in at the beginning of a trend, being the first to have it,” she said.
Last week, Ms. Greenly put her money on what stands to be one of the hottest bags of the fall: a $190 overscale pouch from Ugg, maker of the ubiquitous fuzzy on the inside boots. Sure, the bag, which Ms. Greenly ordered on the Internet, looks like something that might have been worn by a well accoutered Neanderthal. No matter. ”It looked most like the Ugg boots,” she said. ”That’s why I chose it.”
The bags are only a teaser, though. Ugg fans will soon have their pick of pseudo sheepskin ponchos, coats, miniskirts and hoodies. Most of the pieces, which will reach stores like Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom in August, will sell for $135 to $495.
”We believe in the collections based on strength of reaction to the boots,” said Joan Kaner, the Neiman Marcus fashion director. Indeed, within hours of alerting customers online that the Ugg bags could be ordered, the store took in more than $800,000 in advance sales.
